Rookie Mistake!

Yes, I was very excited about our new home and under prepared for the change. I was so focused on the construction delays, closing, rates etc that I did not pick anything for the new house. Now we are moving (slowly - little bit everyday after work) and there is so much to buy...like immediately!

I knew I needed bathroom rugs, kitchen rugs, area rugs (living room - first priority) but I did not (could not) shop. I knew I needed shelf liners and trash cans but I pushed that thought aside. Now, we are bring these boxes home, but I can't unpack before I do some serious shopping! And believe me that's NO fun!
And the bigger stuff - Sofas, coffee table set, foyer table, dinette, bedroom set, curtains..... the list goes on and on. I know we don't have to buy everything at once but I just don't know where to start and what to focus on. I recently realized that sofa can take 4-8 weeks to arrive after you pick 'em! What the what! And of course there is no sale going on.

But we did get few things done - we ordered the temporary blinds and they went on the windows the day we closed, our grout is sealed in master, powder and laundry, appliance are delivered and all the utilities are transferred. And we got the internet set-up today.

And the moving part...... There are no (good) words to describe it.
When/How did we accumulate so much junk???? Yeah, that's right......When I got married!
Yesterday the movers moved the couches (that I will get rid of, if I ever pick a new Sofa set), mattresses, the TV (which is sitting on the floor cos I did not pick an entertainment center yet) and some heavy suitcases and boxes. But there are these tiny, annoying things (everywhere!) that the apartment maybe magically producing, I mean, no room/corner is fully finished, ever!

So in next 4 days we'll need to wind up the moving and clean the apartment. And we have to shop for some much needed stuff!

  2. I'm terrified of moving into the house and then realizing all the stuff I want and using up my (already depleted) finances in a matter of days. Instead, I've started buying stuff now as I see it on really good sale. What this means is the hubs and I are now sharing our 900 sq. ft. apartment with furniture for a 2100 sq. ft. house. Umm, yeah it's cramped. Haha, I don't think there's a right way to do it!

    1. Hey cebwicks! Just started following your story! :) All the best!

You are doing a smart thing. I know accumulating stuff in a small space can be so inconvenient but you appreciate all the money you saved as soon as you get your space! Sales are important, you never wanna pay full price!

  3. I have the opposite problem. I've been buying my stuff since about a month ago even though we don't close on our home until mid October. Problem is I sometimes have to beg for the stores to hold some big items till then like the bedroom sets, sofas and refrigerator. Also Iwon't get a chance to reurn some things if they don't work out because I must have passed the 30 day return period when I actually get to try them. So S&P don't feel bad, it is a catch 22 situation either way you face problems.

    1. No Returns can be hard! But I'm sure you'll be happy once you move in and you have everything you need!

Mid October is not too far away!!! :-)

  4. You're not alone in your plight. We figure to be house poor for the first year! I think we'll tackle our great room then focus upstairs on getting new master bedroom furniture and furniture for our son's room. Then we'll probably work on the basement after that. We'll be doubling our current square-footage with the eventual move, we definitely have a lot of area to furnish once it's ours.

Hopefully Columbus day will have awesome sales for you. Black Friday will also be here before you know it!

  5. We stuck with Criag's List for most of the furniture except the master bedroom, which is from Ashley's Homestore and taking about 25 days to arrive.. We are just like J and M pointed out, house poor... but with a few more ooooo's.. so, house pooooooooooooooooor!

But moving is no fun, and your experience of buying stuff reflects ours. We had no clue there is so much to bring along and so little space it takes in the new home.. and yet we collect more. Nuts!

    1. I know...my sister sold all her beautiful stuff on craigslist when they were moving! If we had a house back in April, I would get all her stuff!

  6. No worries on shopping, just focus on what room you spend the most time in and build out from there. We ordered a sectional 6 months ago and since we never closed I had to have it delivered to my in laws home. So even planning in advance doesn't always work out so well. People sell tons of great stuff on Craigslist if you don't want to wait long and it will save you some money to buy even more. Or call some of the stores and see if they have a floor models that you can take home same day.

    1. Yup, that's pretty much what we are doing right now....focusing on the living room as we spend 80% of our time there! And I am a Craigslist shopper so now you know why I haven't been active here.... ;-)
